Old Things Can Still Be New

In the reading that we had due for Tuesday we had to read the short story "Everyday Use." I really enjoyed this reading because there were a lot of lessons that could have been taught through it. But one thing that stuck out to me was on page 150-151 where it says, "Mamma, Wangero said sweet as a bird,"Can I have these old quilts?" I heard something fall in the kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed. "Why don't you take one or two of the others?" I asked. "These old things was just done by me and Big Dee from some tops your grandma pieced before she died."

When I read this it really reminded me of myself and also other Christians. What I mean by this is when we see something new and something that comes out most recent, we want it. Can anyone answer why? Well I'll answer, it is because it is new and unused. We want the most recent, the most expensive, the coolest looking thing out there just so that we can be accepted in todays world and todays society. In all honesty that is the problem with most Christians and even unsaved people today. I hate seeing young men and young women complain just when they do not have the most expensive thing or the newest thing made.

But I love the text because the mom understood how important the old quilt was. It meant more to her than the new ones did. She just wanted to preserve it and keep it safe. A lot of it was because the old quilt has gone with them for a longer period of time than the new ones they just made. I think that is how we act in todays society. We want the best the newest or the most expensive but God is just asking us to accept the old things and use them for the glory of God!

God calls us to be more like Him in every area of our lives. Maybe sometimes He will ask us to use our new gifts or something new within our lives for Him but also at times He may ask us to pull out the old things in our lives and He will make it new. So always keep your heart open to the fact that maybe sometimes God will want to use the old quilt in your life or He will want to keep it and preserve it for the rest of your life.
